I think Roanoke should use a kangaroo as its mascot. We could say "Go Roanoke Roos" or "Roos Rule" and other such easy to think of slogans. The Mascot could very easily be on the sidelines at outdoor as well as indoor game. Stuffed kangaroos could be sold in the bookstore with ROANOKE ROOS proudly on the little shirt worn by the animals.
Tags: The two pictures I have attached show both a standing, if as ready to fight, like a good Roanoke Athlete would do, or a calmer kangaroo which could be very suitable also for other purposes. http://imagecache2.allposters.com/images/pic/PTGPO

The meaning of maroon is to isolate. Pirates would leave mutinous shipmates on deserted islands, without any means of survival.
Tags: I think the Maroon mascot should be a Pirate because Prates would "Maroon" mutinous shipmates on deserted islands, with no hope for survival, just like we want to do to our opponents!

Roanoke is known for its indigenous natural Springs. Hence "watermen" would honor this heritage within the valley.

delightfully funny and busy animals very loyal to their group so they would show team loyalty so well, and a mascot suit of them would look great! Look at the cute picture of a baby MeerKat. Yea, the Maroon MeerKats!

Where's any pc reference to our native american brethren who originally settled this area before the colonists declared manifest destiny? Monacan is from an Algonquian word signifying "digging stick," or "spade." Essentially, we "bury" our opponents. Also called "Rahowacah." (See any link there to "Roanoke?") The one downside is that it sounds like "mannequin."

maybe as a previous Histiry major this would hit home with some of the ramaining History Profs ie..Miller and Selby. How about naming us the Maroon Generals. Salem was previously Fort Lewis. Led by General Andrew Lewis who served under George Washington. Check with Miller and Selby on this.

My submission for the Maroon Mascott is Marauder (per Wikipedia A marauder is a member of one of the sides of a war raiding for pillage, or roving around carrying out violent attacks. While "marauder" is most often used in the context of war, there is no clear-cut division between it and "robber", and in many contexts the two can be regarded as synonymous.)
