I think the Roanoke mascot should be Greyhounds because greyhounds are classical they are one of the oldest know dogs having had exsisted in ancient egypt but are still around today which portrays the roanoke classicalness but with a modern taste. Greyhounds are fast and agile they are Gentle but very defensive of their families which portrays roanoke because they sports are very good and they take care of their students. Last but not least they are often trained for hunting which could be a symbol of the roanoke teams hunting their oppenents and crushing them.

It would look a bit different from the Looney Tunes character but it would be even fiercer. There is nothing crazier than this animal. Plus he eats everything, nothing stands in his way

Keep the name Maroons. Roanoke is not the only college out there that has the name Maroons. The University of Chicago are also the Maroons. They use a phoenix to represent their athletic teams; though I think a Cardinal could also work because Cardinals can be maroonish in color & they are the state bird of VA.
